Joy Cantey

Joy Cantey is the Senior Director, Program Design for the New Teacher Center.

Previously, Joy served as the Executive Director of PreK-12 Literacy/MTSS in Guilford County Schools, which serves 72,000 students. She has experience teaching students of all ages as well as training educators – including district-level staff, principals, curriculum facilitators, and teachers – in literacy instruction.

Joy has earned numerous certifications, awards, and honors throughout her career, including National Board Certification in Literacy. She has been appointed to several state-level committees for literacy including most recently the North Carolina K-3 Early Literacy Taskforce. Joy is a member of The Reading League.  Her formal training includes a BS degree in Middle Grades Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an M.Ed. in Special Education from Elon University.

Joy is passionate about literacy instruction and social justice. She believes everyone deserves to have the skills necessary to read and write. When she isn’t helping others build their literacy knowledge, Joy enjoys learning, reading, cooking, and spending time with her husband, their three children, and dog.
